For this activity you will be using 4 news websites (CNN, FOX, NPR, and one
additional site of your choice).
Examine the home page for each news source. What stories are most prominent? How
do these stories frame the issue at hand? What does this tell you about the general
orientation of each news source?
When you click on the search icon on each website, you will see a search bar and a list
of topics. What is listed under search topics and each of the different sub areas? What
do these listings say about the orientation of each news source?
Separately enter social movement and protest into the search bar for each website.
What kinds of stories come up? How does each news source frame the
movements/issues that come up?
How do the
various news sources frame the issue/movement differently?
What are the key takeaways from this activity? What did you learn about media
coverage of social movements (or any topic, for that matter)?
